Digital Dental X-Rays

Digital Dental X-Rays: A Safe, Effective Diagnostic Tool

Dental x-rays are an essential tool that allow our dentist in Lincroft and dental hygienists to detect and diagnose abnormalities that would otherwise go undetected. The information obtained through an X-ray allows us to complete an accurate plan of treatment. Digital Dental X-rays are commonly used to check for signs of bone loss, root problems, periodontal disease, oral cancers, and cavities.

Digital X-rays are seen as an essential diagnostic tool with benefits that far outweigh the minute risks of trace radiation exposure.

Digital X-rays Can Reveal Hidden Conditions

Without digital X-rays, hidden conditions may go undetected. Dentists commonly use digital X-rays to reveal issues such as:

  • Abscesses / cysts
  • Bone loss (resorption)
  • Tumors (cancerous/non-cancerous)
  • Tooth decay (interdental)
  • Tooth and root positioning issues
  • Eruption issues
  • Impacted teeth

Dental X-rays allow us to spot and treat dental issues before they can become major problems. This saves patients from the discomfort, time, and cost of undergoing restorative procedures in the future.

How Safe are Digital X-Rays?

A set of “bitewing” X-rays at your dentist office will expose you to roughly 0.005 mSv (micro-Sieverts) of radiation. This is less radiation than you receive in a normal 24-hour period. Digital X-rays have only 10-20% of the radiation found in traditional X-rays. Even though digital X-rays are shown to be a safer alternative to film-based X-rays, we still provide patients with lead aprons to keep the risks to an absolute minimum. Likewise, X-rays are only performed on an as-needed basis.
